CBS Television and The PGA Tour included Community Renewal International in a nationally telecast special featuring Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Shreveport's David Toms and other top golfers on June 7, 2009. "The PGA Tour: Playing with a Purpose," hosted by Jim Nantz, focused on a select group of golfers and their charitable work beyond the fairways and greens. PGA Tour Productions visited Shreveport to spend time with David Toms in his hometown and to see the Community Renewal Friendship House he funded in Shreveport's Queensborough neighborhood. Their story was featured on The Golf Channel on "Inside the PGA Tour," with a portion of the story airing on the "Playing with a Purpose" special. The video clip featured here is 4:22 in length and focuses specifically on the David Toms/Community Renewal partnership. The David Toms Foundation has provided funding for two Friendship Houses. A Friendship House is about 3,400 square feet and contains a large community room which is used for after-school programs, service projects, neighborhood meetings, educational programs and much more. A person employed by Community Renewal and their family live in the Friendship House, earning the trust of neighbors as they became part of the neighborhood and help make that area a safer, more caring place. More than 2,100 children have been through the doors of a Friendship House since the first one opened in 1997. |
